The Wood Works Series
This series began with the Young Doe drawn on a cedar trunk lid I found in a burn pit. I photographed a young doe in the UP and later saw her face in the wood of this trunk lid. I went on to create pieces that tell stories of my encounters with animals during my hikes.
I typically use found objects such as birch bark, cedar and oak wood pieces, and old doors. The wood relic is cleaned, sanded, and stabilized. The textures and patterns found on the relic dominate the composition. The mark-making is intentionally sparse to give the animal a ghostly presence and symbolize its ephemeral nature.
